Reading the care labels on your upholstered furniture

At a glance
W, S, WS, X: these letters indicate which cleaning methods your fabric can tolerate.
💡 Do not confuse the W/S/WS/X furniture codes (often American) with the GINETEX “W in a circle” symbol, which indicates professional wet cleaning of a textile.
Many upholstered items carry a care code. This is guidance from the manufacturer that should take priority.
The most common codes
- W: water-based cleaning is possible.
- S: solvent only, no water.
- WS: water or solvent depending on the stain.
- X: vacuuming only, no liquid products.
GINETEX symbols
On removable covers, standardised care symbols (washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, professional care) indicate what the fabric can tolerate.
💡 Take a photo of the label and attach it to your booking: this helps us prepare the right method.
Where to find the label
- Under the seat or beneath the cushions of a sofa.
- Inside the zip opening of a cover.
- Under the seat of a chair or armchair.
- In the instructions or on the manufacturer's website, using the model reference.
The GINETEX “circle” symbol refers to professional care: a “P” or “F” indicates dry cleaning with solvent, and a “W” in a circle indicates professional wet cleaning. A crossed-out circle means that no professional care of this type is recommended.
Frequently asked questions
My sofa has no label. What should I do?
We test an inconspicuous area on site before cleaning. If the material poses a risk, we let you know before proceeding.
Can I machine-wash a cover if the label allows it?
Yes, following the specified temperature and drying instructions. Some covers shrink: check before putting the cover back on while it is still damp.
