Why clean a sofa with no visible stains?

At a glance
A sofa can look clean yet become dull, smell musty or feel less comfortable. Here's why.
A sofa used every day collects dust, fibres, crumbs and oils from the skin. None of this necessarily forms a distinct stain: the dirt is spread out, which is precisely what makes it hard to notice.
The telltale signs
- The armrests and the top of the backrest are darker than the rest.
- The fabric looks dull or feels rough.
- A musty smell lingers after airing.
- The colour on the underside of a cushion is noticeably brighter.
What vacuuming cannot do
Regular vacuuming removes surface dust and is the best routine care measure. However, it does not remove dirt embedded in the fibres. Spray-extraction cleaning suited to the material allows the fabric to be rinsed deep down.
💡 Always check the sofa's care label before any cleaning: some materials cannot tolerate water.
A quick test to do at home
Wipe a slightly damp white cloth (if the label permits water) over an armrest, then over the underside of a cushion. If the cloth picks up noticeably more colour on the armrest, the fabric is dirty, even if there are no visible stains.
Care between cleanings
- Vacuum weekly, including between the cushions.
- Turn over and swap removable cushions to spread wear evenly.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which dulls some colours.
- Use a throw on the most heavily used areas.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you clean a fabric sofa?
It depends on use: children, pets and daily use call for more frequent cleaning. Vacuum weekly and watch for signs of dirt build-up.
Can cleaning revive the colours?
It removes the dirt that dulls the fabric, often making the colours more vibrant. It does not reverse fading caused by sunlight or wear.
